Not much is known about her life before 12 years of age when she emmigrates to America and the port of New Orleans, U.S.A. She arrived on the Ellen Maria departing from Liverpool, England with 332 Latter Day Saints. She traveled up the Mississippi River to Keokuk, Iowa and crossed the plains to Utah in 1853.

Ellen Married William Butler December 9, 1857. The first child born to this marriage was Mary Ann on 18 Nov 1858.

A tragedy occurred when a stranger broke into her home and attacked her with a hatchet, hitting her in the head several times. He also attacked two of Ellen's children, Ruth, 5 and Ellen 7 when they came to their mother's aid. Mary Ann escaped detection and injury. Miraculously, Ellen survived that attack, had two sons, Heber and Albert and died four years after the attack from pneumonia April 19, 1872 or 1973 in Marriot, Weber, Utah.
