Lorenz Eugene Nissen, widower of Katherine F. Nissen, and father of Kathie L. Oppedahl of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Larry W. Nissen of Merritt Island, Florida, left this earthly life on April 29, 2018, to be with God after a short, brave battle with cancer.
He was born in 1924 to Anton Mads Nissen and Pauline Fuelberth Nissen in 1925 in Page, Nebraska.
A 1943 graduate of Page High School, he enlisted in the Navy that year and was trained as a corpsman and was assigned to the Marine Corps, where he served honorably in the Pacific during World War II. While stationed at Camp Lejuene in 1944, he met Katherine F. Funderburg and after returning from the Pacific Theater, they were married in St. Paul's Lutheran Church on May 8, 1946. The happy couple moved to Page, Nebraska, from 1946-1954, where they farmed and their two children were born.
They returned to Wilmington in 1954 where Lorenz became a member of the Wilmington Fire Department. Over the 24 years of service, he rose from fireman to Fire Marshall, ultimately becoming Assistant Chief of the Department and Special Assistant to the Chief on Operations. After retiring, he became a corporate fire instructor for DuPont and Corning and a security guard for Cape Fear Community College for 12 years.
A long-time member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, he recently served on the Church Council in 2016-2017.
Lorenz is predeceased by his wife, Katherine, of 67 years and four sisters, Louise Clark (Foy), Mabel Eby (Ray), Melda Weber (Esmond), June Webb (Lem) and three brothers Milton Nissen (Beryl), Donald Nissen (Doris) and Dale Nissen (Margaret). He is survived by his children, Kathie L. Oppedahl (Knut), a retired cardiac care nurse of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Larry W. Nissen (Carol), an oral and maxillofacial surgeon of Merritt Island, Florida. Other family survivors include grandchildren Katherine Tone of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Shannon Tinker of Titusville, Florida, Karol White of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Ryan Smith (Jill) of Miami, Florida and Kevin Oppedahl (Terri) of Hiawatha, Iowa. Great grandchildren include Jennifer Haley (Jacob) of Baytown, Texas, Kelsey White, Christopher Oppedahl, Austin Tone and Annaleise Tone, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He has one great, great grandson, Carter Dean Haley, of Baytown, Texas. Other relatives include 28 nieces and nephews and even more great nieces and nephews.
Lorenz' life was filled with joy and love of his family and he travelled extensively to visit with family. He played cards with the "Make It Eight", weekly for over 50 years. His spirit and dedication to his Church, family and friends is an example for all to follow. He is gone, he will be missed, but never forgotten.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 4, 2018, from 6-8 pm at Andrews Market Street Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Saturday, May 5, 2018, at St Paul's Lutheran Church, Sixth and Market Street, Wilmington, N.C. Internment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.
