It is tradition in the Ross Hinson branch of the family that he had a dispute with a neighbor over the fact that Bushrod's sow was rooting up the garden of the neighbor, who threatened to cut the teats off the sow if he caught her doing it again. Bushrod is related to have said: "If you do, I'll kill you." The sow apparently did, and the neighbor cut her teats off, whereupon he killed the neighbor and had to flee the country to keep from being arrested and prosecuted.
He and his young wife, together with daughter Luella, then came to Missouri where other members of the family had already moved. They settled in Lafayette County, where they bought a farm north of Corder about 4 miles, which according to the deed records was purchased 14 Nov 1851 from R. S. Dinwiddie, shown as 81.43 acres being in Section 3, Township 50, North Range 25 West.
Bush Hinson, private, Shelby’s command; enlisted in 1862. In battles of Carthage and Wilson’s Creek, and was killed, August, 1862, near Calhoun, in Henry county, Missouri, by federal soldiers, stationed there.
