Wanda C. McElyea Nelson, 86, of Granite City, formerly of West Frankfort, died at 11:17 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, in University Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Edwardsville.

She was born May 22, 1922, in Landes to Leslie Piper and Elsie (Waldrop) Piper.

Wanda was of Baptist faith.

She is survived by three daughters, Cheryl Herrin and husband Tom of Granite City, Janet Spears and husband, Gerald, of West Frankfort and Brenda McElyea of Nashville, Tenn.; two sons, Charles McElyea Jr. and wife, Marion, of West Frankfort and James McElyea and wife, Mary Jo, of West Frankfort; 11 grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren; three great- great grandchildren; a sister, June Patterson of West Frankfort; and a brother, Alfred Peters of West Frankfort.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Charles F. McElyea Sr.; second husband, Gaylon Nelson; a son, Ferrell Moore; two grandsons, Jeffrey McElyea and Justin Spears; two brothers; and two sisters.

Graveside services were held in Denning Cemetery in West Frankfort. Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort in charge.
