John Samuel Thornton, 85, Bella Vista, passed away April 29, 2017 at his home with the love of his life, Carol, beside him. Survived by wife, Carol, four children, six stepchildren, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Celebration of life will be at later date in Iowa. BELLA VISTA, AR - John Thornton, 85, from Bella Vista, Arkansas, formerly from Conesville, Iowa, passed away April 29, 2017, following a short illness at his home. The love of his life Carol was by his side. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. at The Conesville Fire Station; we will be having a potluck.

John was born December 11, 1931, in Virgil, Kansas, to John J. and Matie Phillips Thornton.

John married Dolly Turner, October 8, 1949, and later divorced. He then married Carol Miller Blodgett on January 28, 1989, in Bella Vista.

John worked at the elevator in Conesville and Standard Oil, then he bought the fertilizer plant in Conesville, where he owned and operated Thornton AG Service. When he retired in 1987, he moved to Bella Vista, AR and worked for Mr. Lube, Rearinden Hall and owned his own mowing business and finally retired in 2015.

John enjoyed spending time with his family and his girl (dog) Peachy. He loved camping, traveling, square dancing, fishing, watching college and professional basketball and football and being on his John Deere mower.

John will be dearly missed by his wife Carol of Bella Vista; four children, Larry (Jane) Thornton of Omaha, NE, Donna (Robert) Beebe of Decorah, IA, Mary Bixby Columbus Junction and Tina (Lawrence) DuBose of Avondale, AZ; six step-children, Bruce (Lynn) Blodgett, Fredonia, IA, Bonnie (Gary) White, Iowa City, IA, Jayne (Marty) Johnson, Wapello, IA, Judy Lesiak and fiance Dan Mahlmeister from Kansas City, KS, and LaDonna Hartsock and fiance Rick Kropt from Wapello, Loretta (Lee) Buress, Fredonia, IA, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, his brother Ralph of Pea Ridge, AR, one niece Shirley Washburn, Garfield AR, one nephew, John Mallon, Emporia, KS, and his adopted siblings.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Jimmy Thornton, three sisters, Lucille, Irene, and Pearl and a son-in-law, Daryl Bixby and his dog Missy.
