Joel Byas/Bias was the son of Larkin Byas and Mary Ellen 'Polly' (Noel) Byas. Joel was born abt. 1778 in Amherst County in Feb 1868.

Joel married his 1st wife Elizabeth Harrison, daughter of James Harrison, on 7 Feb 1819 in Amherst County, VA. They had 5 sons and 1 daughter and Elizabeth died prior to September of 1841. All of the children were between 11 and 17 at the time that Elizabeth died.
Joel remarried on 2 Dec 1841 to Lavina (Martin) Byas and they had 2 sons and 3 daughters.
Joel lost 2 of his sons in the Civil War; Palatine in 1861 and William in 1864 at Harrisonburg, VA
