HAYES — R. Lynwood "Scoot" Emerson, age 77, a lifelong resident of Gloucester, went to be with his heavenly father May 5, 1999. He was a World War II Army veteran and retired from the Naval Weapons Station in 1977 after 37 years of employment. Scoot was a member of Union Baptist Church, Achilles, a lifetime deacon, and taught the Men's Bible Class for 25 years.
A 50-year member of Improved Order of Red Men, Sioux Tribe No. 9, he was an honorary member and past master of Achilles Masonic Lodge No. 281 and served as secretary for 25 years. Mr. Emerson was past district deputy, deputy grand master of the 11th Masonic District. He was past high priest of Urbanna Chapter No. 59, past district deputy grand high priest of the 19th Capitular District. He served as assistant grand lecturer of the 19th Capitular District since 1970. He was a 1998 recipient of the prestigious John Dove Award and had been past commander of Penn Neck Commandery No. 33. Mr. Emerson was a past district deputy grand commander of Division No 1, member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Newport News, and a member of Khedive Temple Norfolk, and had been a member of the Tidewater Shrine Club, Knight of York, Cross of Honor of Rose of Sharon Council, Richmond, and had been a member of Mildred Warner Chapter No. 129, Order of the Eastern Star. A past patron of Mildred Warner Chapter, he served as assistant lecturer for OES for five years. Scoot was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy, and from their marriage he is survived by two daughters Brenda West, and her husband, Jimmy, and Phyllis Matthews, and her husband, John; one son, Franklin Emerson, and his wife, Nell. Scoot found companionship and love, so he remarried Christine Hogge, who also lost her first husband. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Dolly Henderson, and her husband, Jim; stepson, James W. Hogge, and his wife, Sandra; and seven brothers, Brandon, Nelson, Chester, Herbert, Robert Carol, Frederick and Sherwood Emerson; one sister, Elizabeth Smith; and 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
