Joanna Lou (Keen) Samson

Joanna, our beloved mother, passed away peacefully (at the age of 90) to the loving arms of our Heavenly Father on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at home in Ramona, California. Joanna leaves behind three daughters, Julia Wendt (Don), Jo Lynn Kruse (Russ) and Cathy Eskridge (Val), 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Joanna's husband, Roland, preceded her in death in 2008.

Born Joanna Lou Keen on June 14, 1927, in Phenix, Missouri, (near Springfield) the 2nd of 12 children, She weathered the great depression, then rode a bus filled with service men to the San Francisco Bay Area at 16. Married at 18, in Los Angeles, she moved to Juneau, Alaska for a short time, then returned to Los Angeles. There she met Roland and they married in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Valentine's Day 1954. They resided in National City and Spring Valley, California. Joanna was a stay at home mom to Julia, Jo Lynn and Cathy, sewing much of the girls clothing in the early years. Later she became a cosmetology instructor at an El Cajon beauty college where she taught for twenty years. Joanna and Roland retired together to Desert Hot Springs, CA in 1984. She continued to be the hair cutting lady for retired desert folks and family long after retirement. They moved to Hemet after four years where Mom became a moving force at the Villa Del Sol Mobile home park for Bingo, line dancing, Pokeno, aqua exercise, shuffleboard and Hamburger Bash parties. Pies of all flavors were her specialty, baking up to 14 at a time. (Mom's pie crust recipe is the best)

With Dad's passing in November 2008, Joanna continued to live alone in Hemet. The family convinced her to move to Ramona CA in 2012 where Julia and Don had prepared for her. About one month after the move, Mom had a morning stroke. With some difficulty, she recovered almost completely, insisting she would not do it again. Joanna completed many long walks in Holly Oaks Ranch and up and down Julia's drive. Vegas (Don and Julia's English Sitter) became her constant companion, always at Mom's side or at her feet in Joanna's special chair. She continued to help making pies/cookies and insisting on washing dishes until her passing. Over the last 6 years, Joanna loved to play Pokeno each Friday at the Ramona Senior Center with her Ramona friends. Skip Bo, Sequence and Solitaire were other card games she enjoyed regularly.

Visitation for friends and family is from 10 AM to 11 AM with funeral services starting at 11 AM, Monday, February 26, 2018, at The Little Chapel of the Roses,
Glen Abbey Memorial Park, 3838 Bonita Road, Bonita, CA. 91902. Internment services at graveside and catered reception at The Little Lodge, following.
