Born to Samuel Pike Bean and Mahala Clark, Joseph was born on August 14, 1836 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was a graduate of Harvard University with a degree in law and civil engineering. He married Rachel Olson on February 22, 1858 in Eureka, Minnesota. They had ten children, Walter, Ernest, Lavina, Samuel, Florence, Phillip, Ole, Richard, Paul and Jessie.

At the outbreak of the Sioux Indian War, Joe organized the Eureka Company, which consisted of 22 men, which served until Jan 1, 1864, when Joseph and most of his men enlisted in the 2nd Minn. Vol. Cavalry Co. F. He served against the Sioux until honorably discharged on December 21, 1865. He bought land in both Redwood and Cottonwood Counties. Joseph was the first settler in Cottonwood County, having filed on 171.5 acres of what is now Westbrook Township on June 11, 1866.
Shortly after his youngest daughter was born at Westbrook, Joseph moved by covered wagon to Augusta, Montana and went into cattle ranching. The ranch expanded until he had over 20,000 acres and running cattle high up into the mountains. It was located four miles north of Augusta along Sun River.
