Joseph married Mary Steele February 26, 1829 in Akron, Hale County, Alabama. They had five children, Asbury, John, Thomas, Mary and Elizabeth Jane Wedgeworth. No proof that Joseph is actually buried at Mt. Zion but all his family was there prior to 1841 so it's possible he is buried there. His youngest child, Elizabeth Jane was born about 1842.

His wife was the daughter of James & Elizabeth Steele. Her father's birth date of 4 April 1771 is recorded in the Revolutionary War papers filed by his brother, Isaac Steele, on behalf of their mother, Martha Grizzle Dixon Steele, widow of Isaac Steele. James & Elizabeth Steele are last found on the 1850 census of Old Benton Co AL. Their widowed daughter, Mary Wedgeworth, and her 5 children are the next entry. Mary "Polly" Steele Wedgeworth was born about 1807, probably in Old Pendleton Dist SC and died after the 1880 census of Etowah Co AL.
