A Hampton native, Carl Christopher Backus for several years had been fighting multiple major health issues and had been a patient in Riverside Hospital since before Christmas.
Per his request he was placed under transitional care to be at peace.
On 1/19/2018 he went to a much needed rest and peace.

He previously worked for The Kashouty Dealership, Wilcox Bait & Tackle & Chesapeake Bay Shutters.

He was preceded in death by Charles C. & Mary Askew Backus, Charles G. Backus, Laura Ball Clark & Susan Walton Fletcher.

Left to his memory, his much beloved pet, Tiger, his 3 children, C. Christina Backus Latta Brown, Carrie Lindbo Pinson, C. Nathan Backus. His 5 grandchildren, William A. Brown, Karah E. Brown, Matthew Pinson, Thomas Pinson, Emma G. Backus; C. Marquita Latta, his Vancosta's family & friends, nephews and cousins.

Until his health issues became worse, Chris loved to go out in his boat.
He was a cat lover for sure, always taking care of the neighborhood kitty's. Like a proud papa he always had pictures and video's on hand.

Chris always loved music. In 1962 he played in the Thorpe Jr. High School Combo Band.
In 1964 he was the drummer with a local band called “The Stompers” cutting a record with Gary U. S. Bonds.
He was a independent disjocky at Gentleman Jims, The Late Show and The Janitors Closet.
His family was once part of the Buckroe Amusement Park and Pier One.
He was a regular at Vancosta's, earning him the fond title of mayor.
Chris attended Frederick and Hargrave Military Academies.
He joined the Navy Reserve then going active duty serving in the Navy on the carrier Roosevelt becoming a veteran.

In accordance with his desire, his body has been donated to the Virginia State Anatomical Program.
