NEWPORT NEWS - Laura Ellen Ball Clark passed away Saturday, April 30, 2011, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Newport News, Va.
Ms. Clark was a lifelong resident of Hampton Roads and active member of the First United Church of Christ in Hampton, where she was also a Sunday school teacher. Laura enjoyed arts and crafts, gardening, wildlife, and fellowship with family and friends. Her creative and compassionate nature lent to numerous careers including art assistant to the late Barclay Sheaks. She was also a sheet metal craftswoman at Newport News Shipbuilding, a medical assistant to area home care agencies, and an office administrator at Yeargin's Landscaping Services.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Edward Ball Jr. and Edith Godfrey Ball; and brother, James Edward Ball III.
She is survived by her son, Charles Nathan Backus of Hampton, Va.; her daughter, Amy Bollinger Pendley; grandchildren, Grace Ann Pendley and William Logan Pendley of Meherrin, Va.; two sisters, Sandra Ball LeCount of Yorktown, Va., and Virginia Ball Baker of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; one cousin, Joyce Schmidt Tawney of Williamsburg, Va.; and extended family and many friends.
A visitation will be held at 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, at Amory Funeral Home, 410 Grafton Drive. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, at First United Church of Christ, 1017 Todds Lane, Hampton, Va., followed by interment at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, Va.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 11835 Canon Blvd, Ste A102, Newport News, VA 2360.
