Charles Glenn "Sonny" Backus Obituary
POQUOSON - Charles Glenn "Sonny" Backus, 80, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2016. A native of Hampton, Sonny was a resident of Poquoson for 36 years. He was a USMC veteran serving as a rifle instructor. He worked for the U.S. Postal service as a mail clerk, retiring with over 30 years of service. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary Backus; and his grandson, Robert Christopher Backus, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Audrey Backus; sons, Charles "Butch" Backus (Darlene), Robert "Bobby" Backus (Kathy), and Richard "Ricky" Backus; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Carl "Chris" Backus; numerous nieces and nephews; and his furry companion "Rambo". A Celebration of Sonny's life will be held Wednesday, April 20, 6:30 PM, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson, led by Pastor George V. Insley, Jr., with military honors. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. At other times, the family will be at Audrey and Sonny's home. Burial will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Peninsula SPCA, 523 J. Clyde Morris Blvd, Newport News, VA 23601, Attn: Megan Steele and/or American Diabetes Association , 870 Greenbrier Square, (Greenbrier Tower II, Suite 404) Chesapeake, VA 23320. "The family wants to especially thank Bob Jr. for everything he did for Sonny."
