John Taylor was born in Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA, a son of Captain William Taylor of Barnstable MA (1712-1802) and Desire Thacher (1720-1800). His father Cpt. William Taylor was a ship captain for many years and was a naval officer of Barnstable from 1779-1789.

John married Lucia Watson b. 1778, d. 1861; of the colonial Watson family of Plymouth MA. She was the daughter of John and Lucia Marston Watson (son of John and Elizabeth Reynolds Watson, son of John and Sarah Rogers Watson, son of Elkanah and Mercy Hedge Watson). Theirs was the first marriage on Clark's Island in Plymouth, taking place on May 25, 1799.

John lived in both Baltimore, MD and in South Lambeth, England for several years. He was interested with this brother William W. Taylor (Baltimore merchant and bank president) in shipping between London, Baltimore and Boston. His brother Thacher Taylor was also involved, and his son William followed suit.

John and Lucia Watson Taylor had the following children:

1. Lucia Watson Taylor b. 1800, d. 1816. Buried in this cemetery in Lot 12, originally Lot 142, which was owned by her uncle William Taylor

2. William John Taylor b. 1801, d.1802.

3. Jeanette Taylor b. 1802 in England, d. 1859. married Pelham W. Warren. Buried in Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA.

4. William Taylor b. 1804 in South Lambeth England and died 1851 in Boston. He was connected in business in early life with his uncle William Taylor and was one of the first cotton brokers in Boston. He married Elizabeth Robbins Vila. He is buried at Burial Hill, Plymouth, MA.
