Helen M. Knickerbacker, 84, a Suicide After Dressing for Dinner

The Medical Examiner will report to-day that Mrs. Helen M. Knickerbacker, 84 years old, committed suicide by jumping from a window of her ten room apartment on the 11th floor of the Langhan Apartments, No. 135 Central Park West, between 73d and 74th Streets, last evening [30 Jan]. Because of a 2 foot ledge, it was said to be virtually impossible for a person to fall out of one of the windows on that floor. No one is able to surmise a reason, however, for Mrs. Knickerbacker’s act. She had appeared cheerful and returned from an auto ride and dressed for dinner when her companion, Miss Emma Mines, knocked on the door of her bedroom to announce dinner. Receiving no answer, she opened the door, and saw an open window, and on looking out could see a crowd around the glass canopy at the entrance, in the steel framework of which the body had been caught.

Mrs. Knickerbacker was the widow of Henry Knickerbacker, a stock broker, at No. 25 Broad St., who died 15 year ago. Their son Henry, then 26 [s/b 23] years old, shot and killed himself in the old Worden Hotel in Saratoga 30 years ago [ actually Feb 13, 1888], but the cause never was disclosed. The only other child, William, died soon after his brother [actually Aug 23, 1913].
