Rebecca was the daughter of George Mack Bates and Peggy Runion and was married first to James Earnest Blackwell. He was probably the father of Clyde, and possibly Dossie, but Rebecca had James Ernest, Jr., Ollie and Thomas after Ernest Sr. passed. Some researchers say he died 1890, others 1895, no one seems to have proof of either date.

Rebecca married Lee Bumgarner in Polk County the 18th of January 1911 and he died five months later, 29 July 1911, in what was then called, "the Poor House" operated at the time by Mr. Lyle.

Rebecca died in Eastern State Mental Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee on May 20, 1922 and her obituary in the Polk News says she was sent back to Benton for burial in Benton Town cemetery.
