John M. Shaefer
John Michal Shaefer was the second of four sons and one daughter of Adam and Wilhelmina Shaefer, who came from Germany about 1860. He was born in Ellinville, Ulster county, New York, near the city of New York, March 2, 1863. The family moved to Kansas in 1870 and soon afterward homesteaded about four miles southwest of Centralia. He attended the near-by Pleasant Hill school.

On April 25, 1889, Mr. Shaefer was united in marriage to Miss Octavia Jessee. They built their farm home southwest of his parents' farm. Their home was blest with a son and three daughters. Twelve years ago Mr. and Mrs. Shaefer moved into town to care for her mother. Here, a year ago, many friends came to congratulate them on their golden wedding anniversary. All through the years he has been a kind and thoughtful husband and father, justly deserving the love they have given in return.

Mr. Shaefer and his wife united with the Methodist church in Centralia on 6 months probation on January 20, 1896, and were received into full membership June 14, under the ministry of the Rev. John Cook.

Although Mr. Shaefer had been an arthritis sufferer for several years, his fatal illness was of but a day's duration, and death tenderly claimed him at 5:20 Saturday afternoon July 20, 1940. The deceased was preceded in death by most of his father's family and by his son George in 1934. There remains to mourn his passing: a brother, Leonard; his widow, their daughters, Lillian Tinker of Twin Falls, Idaho, Grace Lohmuller of Cedar, and Mattie Blair of Centralia; three granddaughters and three grandsons, other relatives and numerous friends.

At the brief home service, the Rev. T.K. Bosworth, for a decade a neighbor and friend, read from John:14; and his pastor offered prayer. The funeral cortege moved to the Methodist church for a 10 a.m. service Tuesday in charge of the pastor, Rev. James B. Wright, assisted by the Rev. T.K. Bosworth. The male quartet, Oscar Darr, Earl Hightower, George Young and Arthur Myers sang Face to Face and My Father Knows. L.D. Richardson of Havensville sang No Night There. Miss Esther Laney Wright was at the piano. The pallbearers were Raymond Blair, Edward Tinker, Richard Lohmuller Jr., Lloyd Shaefer, and Duane Ice. Flower bearers were Miss Marie Jessee and Mrs. Oscar Darr. Burial was made in the Centralia cemetery.
