On March 27, 1940, Hazel was united in marriage to Thomas Amlie in Nassau, IA at the Little Brown Church. They lived in Benson for four years, then moved to their farm at Camp Lake in 1944. After spending time raising her family, Hazel returned to school and received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota, Morris. She taught in rural schools in Pope County and spent the last 17 years with Benson Public Schools as the reading director prior to her retirement in June, 1981.
Hazel thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family, being a part of community activities, reading, volunteer work and travel. She traveled to Europe, Mexico and all across the U.S. She was also able to spend many winters in California with her daughters. Hazel was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and active in ladies aid and served as a Sunday School teacher.
Hazel was called from this life on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Swift County Benson Hospital. She attained the age of 93 years, 10 months and 15 days.
Hazel is survived by her children: Cleo Knapp , Coni Amlie, and Paul (Linda) Amlie; her grandchildren: Tim Amlie, Beth Amlie, Owen Knapp , and Eric (Rosa) Knapp; a great grandchild Madison Knapp; her sister, Hannah Sanders; and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Preceding her in death were husband Tom in 1981; her parents; and her brothers Chester and Sidney Tvedt.
