Sidney N. Tvedt, age 95, of rural Glenwood, died unexpectedly on Saturday, September
26, 2009, at his residence. Funeral services will be at 2:30 P.M. on Saturday, October 4th
at West Lake Johanna Lutheran Church, rural Brooten, with Rev. Bryant Kaden
officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. on Friday at the funeral home in
Glenwood and resume on Saturday at the church, one hour prior to the service. Interment
will be in West Lake Johanna Cemetery. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral
Home of Glenwood. Sidney Norine Tvedt, son of Albert and Hilda (Anderson) Tvedt, was
born on November 22, 1913, on the family farm in Gilchrist Township, Pope County,
Minnesota. Following Albert's death in 1920, the family moved to Camp Lake where they
lived until 1931 when they returned to the farm. It was at this time that Sidney and Chester
began their lifelong farming partnership. Sidney enlisted in the U.S. Army on September
17, 1942, serving as a mechanic and carpenter in Wisconsin, Ohio and England during
WWII. While stationed in England, he met Jeanne Mary Cowdery of Basingstoke,
England at a dance in Tidworth, England. Sidney was honorably discharged on
December 27, 1945. Almost two years later, Jeanne sailed to the U.S. on the H.M.S.
Mauretania to join him. She arrived in a blizzard and the two were married on November
20, 1947 at the Rolling Forks Lutheran parsonage. The couple made their home on the
farm place in Gilchrist Township where they raised their two children, Diane "Dee" and
John. Jeanne passed away on June 6, 2001. Sidney was a life-long member of West
Lake Johanna Lutheran Church; he served 57 years on the Gilchrist Township Board and
was a 61 year member of the American Legion. Sidney was a frugal, creative and
stubborn Norwegian, blessed with an abundance of common sense. Like many others his
age, having lived through the Great Depression made him appreciate what he had and
gave him a spirit of contentment in all circumstances. He was an avid mechanic,
carpenter and inventor, known for his ability to not only repair things but improve upon
their design. He enjoyed reading, listening to Norwegian old-time music and the company
of cats. Sidney displayed great patience in solving large problems and it was probably the
fact that he placed little value on his time that made him so eager to drop his own projects
to go and help a friend or neighbor. Sidney is survived by his daughter, Diane "Dee" Tvedt
of Minneapolis, MN, and his son, John Tvedt of Glenwood, MN; two sisters, Hazel Amlie of
Benson, MN, and Hannah Sanders of Glenwood, MN; as well as several nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jeanne in 2001, his brother,
Chester in 2005 and a nephew, Richard Sanders in 2000.
