Hannah Amanda Tvedt was born on February 14, 1920, in Gilchrist Township, Minnesota, the fourth child of Albert and Hilda (Anderson) Tvedt. Her father died when she was six weeks old, so her mother moved the family to the home of her brother, Thosten Anderson. Hannah was baptized and confirmed at west Lake Johanna Lutheran Church of rural Brooten.
Hannah graduated from Glenwood Teacher's Training in 1939. She taught in the rural schools from 1939–43 and 1968-69 and also served on the Rural District #82 school board for 22 years. She earned a degree in elementary education from U of M – Morris in 1970 and a certificate in developmental reading from St. Cloud State in 1978. She taught at Brooten Elementary School from 1970-85.
Hannah married Ralph Sanders of Sunburg on August 23, 1941, at the Rolling Forks parsonage. They farmed in Gilchrist Township until 1973, when they moved to Brooten. Hannah lived there until 1987, then moved to Glenwood.
Hannah was a lifelong member of West Lake Johanna Lutheran Church, where she served as Sunday school teacher for 40 years and held numerous offices in the church organization. She also served on the Glenwood Retirement Home board for 21 years.
Hannah enjoyed gardening, music, traveling, bird watching and family history. She is the author of seven books on history and genealogy. She was an avid member of Sons of Norway and often taught and translated Norwegian for friends and neighbors. She was also active with the Pope County Historical Society, coordinating the project to renovate the Urjan Iverson cabin in 1992. At the time of her death, Hannah was living at Glenwood Retirement Village.
Hannah is survived by her son, Sam (Carol) Sanders of Brooten; daughter in-law, Susan (Jerry) Voss of Brooten; and grandchildren, Amy (Dana) Christophersen of Brooklyn Park, Tom Sanders of Fargo, Tony Sanders of Long Prairie, and Michelle Sanders of Grand Forks, ND.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph in 1987; brothers, Sidney (and Jeanne) Tvedt and Chester (and Lenice) Tvedt; a sister, Hazel (and Tom) Amlie; a son, Richard in 2000; and a stillborn daughter in 1942.
