US Congressman. He was born one of seven children as William Henry Mills Pusey in Washington, Pennsylvania, to Nathan Pusey and his wife Martha Mills Pusey on July 26, 1826. He was educated and later attended and graduated from the prestigious Washington & Pennsylvania College in Washington, Pennsylvania, in the same class as the future United States Representative from Maine, Secretary of State, and Speaker of the United States House of Representatives James Gillespie Blaine (1830-1893), in 1847. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar but only engaged in extensive practice. He then moved back to his native Council Bluffs, Iowa, and took up banking with his brother-in-law Thomas Officer. He then entered politics and served as a Member of the Iowa State Senate representing a 22-county district in a sparsely populated western Iowa from 1858 to 1862. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed the outgoing United States Representative Cyrus Clay Carpenter (1829-1898), on March 4, 1883. He was the first Democratic Party Member to be elected to the United States Congress from Southwestern Iowa since the outbreak of the American Civil War having defeated United States Representative Albert Raney Anderson (1837-1898), for the seat in 1882. A Member of the Democratic Party, he then served Iowa's 9th District (Forty-Eighth Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1883, to March 3, 1885. He was an unsuccessful Candidate for reelection to the Forty-Ninth Congress in 1884. After his term in the United States Congress expired he was succeeded in office by United States Representative Joseph Lyman (1840-1890), on March 4, 1885. After his time in the United States Congress, he moved back to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and resumed his banking pursuits until his death. He was married to Sarah Ellen Officer Pusey (1828-1919), with whom he had seven children. He passed away at a state insane asylum in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on November 15, 1900, at the age of 74, and he was buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where several other famous personalities are also laid to rest. He was survived by his wife and three children.
