Son of Samuel Vail 1654-1695 & Elizabeth Hunt Gach 1657-1747.
Source: New York, Genealogical Records, 1675-1920, Daniel Vaile, year of Birth about 1687, New York. He was the first of this family to spell his last name as Vaile, some records with two ll's.

He married 10 October, 1717, Hannah Griffing (or Griffin), and they had 15 children. The earliest word we have about Daniel (3) Vaill is that he was living at Southold, L. I, N.Y.
Of his 15 children only five lived to grow up; "this extreme mortality among the members of his family during their infancy at Southold may have been the reason for Daniel's removal to Connecticut, where he became the founder of the Connecticut Class of Vails" . New York, Genealogical Records, 1675-1920; Name Daniel Vaile, Death Date abt 1747, Burial Date abt 1747

In 2019, I received an inquiry from Jeff Both that he believed that Daniel's parents were John Vail 1663-1686 and Grace Braddick (b. 1666-?), based on background information titled "The Refugees of 1776 from Long Island to Connecticut", page. 614. Jeff hired Pauline Merrick to research some findings and furnished a copy of her opinions to me. Merrick named a few potential records: 1) 1715 militia list for Southold, listing John and a Daniel Vaile. 2) 1698 Census in Southold, listing a John & Daniel Vaile. Merrick 's opinion held that since Daniel was NOT named in his parents will, deeds or other documents, that "Daniel {was likely} the son of Grace & John." Additionally , Merrick, commented that Arthur Vaile research & notes compiled in the 19th century and now collected by the New York Biographical and Genealogical Society and examined by William Penn, relied on "undefined level of cousinship and notes were hearsay", and further states in her opinion, that the Westchester Vails and the Southold Vails "may very well have been" cousins. These are strong opinions by Mrs. Merrick, but do not provide any fact or merit to alter this memorial.

There are multiple family trees that have varied information about Daniel Vaile and it is possible that John & Grace had a son named Daniel, as well as Samuel and Elizabeth Vail. It was very common through the strings of generations to carry a common first name among brothers, cousins, etc. I often wonder how they all kept each other's name straight in the presence of a large family gathering. There are family stories suggesting that nicknames were given, as evidenced by color of their hair, or other geographic locations. The stories and family history is what kept the Vail's, Shotwell's, Laing's, Webster's and other family names in the mix of their legacy. I am most grateful to those that gave us a pathway into our past.

It is not my position to demystify the writings, of highly regarded and published genealogists, nor the paid opinions of others. Rather this memorial was designed to honor the deceased and we thank you Daniel Vaile for your contributions and legacy.
