Son of Samuel Vail 1654-1695 & Elizabeth Gach Griffith Hunt 1657-1747. Thomas was the sixth son of seven children.

His parents were of Westchester, NY, and his siblings migrated to Woodbridge area, which appeared to be his residence as a young adult.

There are a number of spelling variations of the modern family name: Vail, Vaill, Vaile and Veal.

Thomas (3) Vail at the Woodbridge M. M. of 21 February, 1716/17, declared with Experience Fitz Randolph their first intention of marriage. They again declared their intention before the Meeting on the 21 March, 1716/17 at which time permission was granted. This marriage, however, did not eventuate. Instead she married another, out of the unity of the Meeting and without the consent of her parents.

It being out of the power of Thomas Vail to recover this refractory one, we find him with Rachel Fitz Randolph, on the 15 August and on the 19 September, 1717, at the Woodbridge M. M. declaring their 1st and 2nd. intention of marriage and receiving the consent of the Meeting.
