Gideon Allen passed away at home Saturday at the age of 76. Gideon’s name was chosen from the Bible and he spent his life in love and service to his fellow man. He has never met a stranger, a giant among men, but frail in body as he spent the last 16 months housebound with a broken back and ribs. Gideon finally succumbed to complications from those injuries.

Gideon was born and raised in Kanab, Utah. He met and married his Eternal Companion LaNette (Curtis) Allen of Salina, Utah; who preceded him in death February 2, 2016.

Gideon and LaNette were married 55 years and sealed in the Manti, Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Gideon was the 9th of 14 children, and he affectionately referred to himself as the oldest of the 2nd half of the boys. He is preceded in death by his parents, Philo Allen, and Erma (Heaton) Allen, Sisters Virginia, LaRene, Vesta, Shirley, Brothers Philo, John, Jesse, Leonard. Gideon is survived by his brothers, Israel (Laura), Ashley (Blakie), Fred (Becky), John’s wife Gloria, Leonard’s wife June, Don (Merle), and Steven (Ida).

Also survived by three daughters, 8 grand children, 19 great grandchildren.

Daughter Paulene (Will) Holland of Killeen, Texas. Granddaughter Rachael (Nick) Walker, great grandchildren Preston and Piper. Granddaughter Danielle (Wayne) Ploeckelmann, great grandchildren Alyssa and Alex.

Daughter Janice (Forrest) Benedict of Boise, Idaho. Granddaughter Tiesha (Chris) Anderson, great grandchildren, Lucy, Tommy, Abby, Madeline. Granddaughter Tiffany (Aaron) Shearman, great grandchildren Aylee and Isaac. Grandson Thad (Lauren) Benedict, great grandchildren, Ari, Xury, Davy. Granddaughter Tabitha (Kyle) Krause, great grandchild Coral.

Susanne (Dave) Thames of Meridian, Idaho. Granddaughter Emilee (Chris) Wallace, great grandchildren, Collin and Daxton. Granddaughter Heather (Adam) McHan, great grandchildren, Braxton, Aiden, Adeline. Numerous nieces, nephews, extended family.

Gideon (Gid) and LaNette lived in Salt Lake City, Utah where each of their three daughters were born and raised. Gideon attended Trade Tech and became a skilled mechanic working on diesel engines for Detroit Diesel Allison for 12 years, and then transferred with the company - moving the family to Boise, Idaho as sales manager selling diesel engines and generators throughout the tri state area until he retired after 49 years. He could “MacGyver” his way out of just about any situation, except for trucking accidents, brain tumor operations and a broken back.

Gideon excelled in boxing and track growing up in Kanab. He enjoyed hiking the “K” hill and acting with his brothers in several western movies. Gideon even met Doris Day, who offered to give him a dime for each freckle if he could count them all. Gideon grew up in a small 2 room home and the family worked together gathering coal, cutting Christmas trees, chopping cedar fence posts and building fences to earn a living. Gideon loved his nurturing mother and did his part to help provide for his parents throughout their lives.

Gideon had a great and healthy heart… he was a true Samaritan and gave the very coat from his back, food storage, gas money, loaning his vehicle, and time…and lots of it… to anyone in need. Gideon served in several capacities as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, as a Scout Master, Home Teacher, Bishop, High Councilman, and finally a Full-Time Missionary with his sweet wife LaNette. He truly loved those he served and wished his declining health could have allowed him to do more. Family meant everything to him and he often gathered whoever was available to come and have lunch or dinner at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Gideon was an accomplished gardener and successfully grew and entered the “great and giant” pumpkin growing contest for several years. He enjoyed spending time with his brothers, dutch oven cooking, driving and tinkering with his dune buggy, and telling jokes and stories. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always a positive role model.

Gideon has left a lasting impact on his family as Patriarch. He always said to his wife and daughters “have I told you lately, that I love you”. We all knew we were loved. As grands and greats began to fill the family tree, he would just say “lately”. So, Dad “Lately”!
