Carrie never married. When she was 16 she spent a year in France as an au pair to a widower, a friend of Seán and Maud Gonne MacBride, who had a daughter the same age as Carrie. She came home with her hair up, and had learnt to ride a bike and play the piano. She was an expert at many types of crafts. She ran Daly's Confectionary and Cake shop on Sarsfield Street, Limerick. She had an ambition to be a nurse, but she wasn't allowed as it would mean training in England and moving away from home.
Her father was a Fenian as was her uncle John Daly. Her brother Ned Daly was executed for his part in the Easter 1916 Rising. Her sister, Kathleen, was married to Tom Clarke, who was also executed for the 1916 Rising.
