June 7th 2021: This added information was provided from records at St. Nazianz for Peters wife. Improved dates of birth and death, and variation in wife's maiden name noted:

Backes, Margarete nee Heinzen (April 1, 1804-Jan. 18, 1902 –wife of Peter Backes [May 9, 1792-Aug. 5, 1854] –Peter and Margareta were married on March 5, 1821 at St. Jakob Catholic Church in Weiskirchen, Merzig, Saarland, Germany –daughter of Johann Heinzen [1766-1836] and Maria Margarete Mueller [1761-1833] –from the 1840's until at least the death of her husband Peter in 1854, Margareta lived in Mequon, Ozaukee County –died from "old age –indigestion") –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 1, Row 17, Lot 16 –stone] [death record Manitowoc 7-36]

Previous records: PETER BACKES (Johannes) was baptized on 19 May 1792 in St. Jakob's. Peter's Godparents were Peter Schneider of Thailen, and Anna Maria Bart of Wadern. FHL #558661, page 91. He married Margaretha HENS, daughter of Johann HENS and Maria MUELLER, on 4 March 1821 in St. Jakob's, Weiskirchen. The witnesses for their marriage were Joannes Backes and Joannes Hens who reside in Thailen. The marriage record shows he was the son of Joannis Backes and Anna Maria Bart who were married in Thailen and she was the daughter of Joannis Hens and Mariae Muller of Thailen. FHC #558662, - Weiskirchen Church Records.
Peter bought 40 acres in Sec. 13, Tpw. 11N, North of Range 20E. Doc. #30663. He invited his neighbors to his home and the first Catholic mass in the Mequon area was celebrated in his living room. His property was located at the northwest corner of present day Mequon and Range Line Roads. Peter and Margaretha transferred 2 acres of E1/2, SE1/4, sect. 24, T9N, R21E to Peter Barth, then the trustee of St. James Church, for $1.00. (Vol. B of Deeds, p. 36.) On 19 February 1848, Peter Barth transferred the same land back to Peter Backes, who immediately transferred the deed to the Milwaukee Archdiocese for the use of St. James Congregation. A small log church was built in 1845 but was replaced in 1855 by a stone church. In 1848 a log school was built for religious education and was located about 200 feet east of the present church. This may explain the reference in the parish record of Peter's death of him being a founder of the congregation.
Peter and Margaretha conveyed the NE 1/4 of Sec 30-9-22E, 160 acres for $450.00. V.D.P384. The mortgage was paid in full on February 5, 1855. V.2 P569, a quick claim deed shows that the following were heirs of Peter Backes. Angela Backes, wife of Johann Peter Sewald, Peter Backes - no wife, Mathias Scherer and Elizabeth Backes and Maria Backes.
The death records of St. James, page 244 show that Peter Backes was the founder of St. James Catholic Church in Mequon. He died on 5 August 1854 at age 62. After his death in 1854, the land was sold to Mathias Backes by his heirs: Angela, wife of Peter Sewald, John and Susanna Federspiel (nee Backes?). and Maria Backes. Margaretha did not sigen off on the transaction until 31 January 1894, when Mathias borrowed $4,900 from Laura Molkentin. The family is listed as 'Peter Parkins' in the Wisconsin 1850 census. NOTE: Misc. records. Maria, the daughter of Peter Backes and Johanna, was born 30 August 1750. Godparents were Peter Wagner of Thailen, and Maria ? of Weiskirchen. Peter Backes, the son of Johan Backes and Susanna ?? was baptized 10 May 1749. Anna Backes, dau of Johan Backes and Susanna ?? was baptized 26 April 1754.
