The son of William & Catherine (Crum) Baldwin, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Leesburg, Cumberland County, August 20, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 23 as a private with Co. G, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

Piecing together a cloudily documented marital life, it appears that he married Mary A. Warren and fathered Eugene Elmore "Elmer" (b. @1869), Addie Bell (b. 12/24/71 - married Isaiah Knouse), and Anna L. (b. 03/15/73 - married Joseph Baldwin). Denton, surname "Lynne," appears to have been a stepchild but is reported as a biological offspring in family trees. Mary either died or they separated because he married Leah L. Stauffer and fathered Minnie Kate (b. 04/04/77 - married George W. McCauslin), Cora A. (b. @1878 - married Edward Bush), and William (b. 01/??/80). Leah died and he married Sophia Stauffer (surname per two sons' obituaries) and fathered George Wilson (b. 01/24/82), Jane Abbie (b. 02/29/84 - married Mervin A. Beamer), Nellie (b. @1887 - married Daniel Miller), and Benjamin H. (b. 1889). Sophia apparently died, perhaps in childbirth.

In 1890, he was still lived in Menallen Township, Adams County, where he died at the home of his daughter (either Nellie or Minnie - obit says "Millie") at age 75-8-11 from "capillary bronchitis."
