Harley J. Hudgins age 85, of Scottsdale, AZ peaceful passed on July 31, 2017, holding hands with his wife of 66 years and surrounded by his family.
Harley was born in Meridian, Idaho to Jesse and Iva Hudgins, he was the seventh of seven children.
He met the love of his life, Barbara, when he was 18 years old at a burger/ice cream parlour named Dixie’s in Nampa, Idaho. He loved to tell the story of when he saw her for the first time and how they met. They were married soon after and drove the winding and icy Alaska (Alcan) Highway in March of 1953 to Anchorage where they made their home until retirement.
Harley worked for telephone companies for over forty years, both technical and managerial positions. He was loyal and had an outstanding work ethic. He was also extremely active in the order of Elks, serving both local lodges as well as the national organization.
Harley and Barbara had a love for travel and adventure. They have been all over the world, but their favorite trips were in their motorhome together visiting all 50 states.
He loved a gin and tonic, a good slice of pizza, and a weekly movie at the theatre with his wife. They retired in Arizona to be closer to their daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Our family feels fortunate to have been able to celebrate all holidays, his birthdays and their wedding anniversaries with them for many years. He was extremely loving and very proud of his family.
With his passing, his grandson said, “that is a tough act to follow.” Harley had a quiet dignity; he was the gentlest man and always treated everyone with the utmost respect and kindness.
We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from him. It seemed that no matter what questions or problem arose, he always had insight and always knew the answer. We will miss his voice, his advice, and his demeanor.
Harley is survived by his wife Barbara Ann and daughters Zana Williams (Cliff) and Stacy Malcolm (Roger); four grandchildren Jeff Harned (Jahna), Ryan Harned, Jessica Malcolm Carlson (Nick) and Luke Malcolm, four great grandchildren Joshua, Jayden, Jake and Jenna. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Messinger Funeral Home 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Road Scottsdale, Arizona on Tuesday, August 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. A private family service with internment at Paradise Memorial Gardens will follow.
