Walter was born on March 14, 1922, in Yuma, Colorado, to Thomas Glenn and Norma (Gatten) Southwell. He entered the Air Force in 1944 and was a bombardier in WWII. He passed away on May 8, 2017 in Peoria, Arizona, at the age of 95.

A graveside service is planned with Military Honors, for June 6, 2017 at 1pm at Zion Memorial Park Cemetery in Canby, Oregon.

Walter was a member of the 505th Bomb Group and the 484th Sqdn. which trained in Harvard, NE. He was the Bombardier on Crew 84-13, flying in B-29 'Sassy Lassy' and 'Lassy Too' and was stationed on Tinian in 1945 completing many missions to Japan.
