William is the sixth of seven children born to John George Watson and Elizabeth Jane Bennett. Soon after his birth his family moved to Montpelier, Bear Lake, Idaho. By 1910 they had moved back to Utah and settled in Layton.
William married Hortense McCracken on July 25, 1919. They lived in the Teton Basin of Idaho for a time and then moved to Nampa, Idaho. Their three children were born and raised there.
