Katherine E. Keene, formerly of Columbia, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at Eldon Health Care in Eldon. She was 89.
Mrs. Keene was born Oct. 21, 1912, in Columbia to Samuel Thomas and Lillie Lynes Sublett. She married George W. Keene on Jan. 31, 1931, and worked at the admissions office at MU.

She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Columbia and its Lemmon Circle, a women's group, as long as her health permitted. She attended the organization's luncheons when possible. Also, she was involved in the PTA and the Extension Club, a homemakers' organization.
Lisa Tracey, Keene's granddaughter, said her grandmother was outgoing. "When we went to Wal-Mart, she had to talk to every clerk whether she knew them or not," said Tracey.
Mrs. Keene also enjoyed gardening and traveling. She visited Disney World with Tracey and her husband.

Visitation for Mrs. Keene will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services, conducted by the Rev. Bob Leach, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Keene is survived by her daughter, Mary Kay Sevier of Eldon; a sister, Evelyn Bartel of Mill-ville, N.J.; three granddaughters, Lisa Tracey of Columbia, LeAnn Reeder of Ashland, and Leslie Burton of Guthrie, Okla.; and five great-grandchildren. "She was a great lady," said Reeder, "She was very important to me and her great-grandchildren."

Her husband, George Washsington Keene, two brothers and three sisters died earlier.

Memorials may be sent to Central Missouri Kidney Association at P.O. Box 1915, Columbia, Mo. 65203 or the American Diabetes Association at 1316 Parkade Blvd., Columbia, Mo. 65202.
"She was a wonderful, sweet woman, and we're going to miss her very much," said Burton.
