obit: George Ferdinand Allen, 80 died at his home in East Valley Township 20 March 1915. He was born near Boston, Massachusetts, 24 January 1835.
He was left fatherless when he was four years old. His mother removed to Southern Indiana, where she died ten years after her husband. Being left to care for himself, he set to work and learned the trade of cabinet maker and civil engineering. At the age of 26 when the Civil War broke out he enlisted for the Union side in August 1861 taking an active part in some of the fiercest battles of the great conflict. In 1866 he left Indiana for Kansas but stopped in Macon where he secured work as a farm hand and met Miss Lucinda Ellis who became his wife 18 January 1872. In September of the same year they bought a 40 acre farm in Valley township where they resided for the rest of his life.
Besides his wife he leaves ten children; Mrs. Mary M. Bates and John C. Allen of Los Angeles, Calif.; James F. Allen of Gwnedolen, Oregon; Mrs. Eliza A. McCully, Mrs. Luella M. Dixon, William F. Allen, George G. Allen, Ross M. Allen, Rowena M. Allen and Lavina F. Allen all living in Macon County. A daughter Ada E. Allen died in infancy.
To conform to expressed views of the deceased no formal funeral was held. Interment in Old Chariton Cemetery.
