Church Hill - Gertrude Marsh Messick, 73, 105 Cold Comfort Road, passed away Saturday (August 26, 2000) at her home following an extended illness. Mrs. Messick was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County and a member of the Mount Mitchell Primitive Baptist Church. She was president of the Ladies Auxillary of Church Hill VFW Post No. 9754 and was voted president of the year. She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society fundraising breakfast where she prepared biscuits. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and loved cooking, crocheting and her flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Pierce Messick, April 19, 1999; her parents Orbin anf Maude Tucker Marsh; brothers, Orbin Marsh Jr., Buster Marsh and Ed Marsh; and a sister, Rheata Wallace. Surviving are one son, Ricky Messick, Church Hill; three daughters and son-in-law, Judy and Charles Pouchert, Hartland, Wis., Rose Messick and Lori Painter, both of Church Hill, three grandchildren, Dustin Berry, Jackie Messick and John Painter; six stepchildren; 21 step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Joe Marsh, Church Hill; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Johnson Funeral Home, Church Hill, and anytime at the residence. Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Roger Dinsmore officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Church Hill Memory Gardens.
