Mrs. Thayer was a Chilhowie native and had lived in Michigan and Tennessee before moving to Abingdon 77 years ago.
She was a homemaker and a farmer.
Mrs. Thayer attended Martha Washington College, where she earned a certificate in secretarial science.
She was a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School.
Mrs. Thayer was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Clifton Thayer, in 1954.
Survivors include two daughters, Hazel Ruth Orfield, Meadowview, and Virginia Ellaree Thayer, of the home; six sons, Thomas Edward Thayer, of the home, James Lewis Thayer, Bristol, Tenn., William Howard Thayer and the Rev. Donald Clifton Thayer, both of Abingdon, the Rev. John Garland Thayer, Limestone, Tenn., and David Kyle Thayer, Hopewell; one sister, Pauline Oliver, Bristol, Tenn.; one brother, Kent Broyles, Marion; 25 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service for Lola Luella Broyles Thayer will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 1995, at Mt. View United Methodist Church in Abingdon, with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, 1995, at Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon. Active pallbearers will be the following grandsons: Dwane Orfield, Billy Thayer, Jimmy Thayer, Kevin Thayer, Wade Thayer and Trygve Thayer. Other grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to contribute to the Building Fund of the Mt. View United Methodist Church, in care of Susie Coleman, treasurer, 22194 Pickett Lane, Abingdon, Va., 24211.
