A good venerable pioneer citizen passed to her reward when Mrs. Mary Kaufman answered the final summons, Oct. 24. She was born near Paris, France, the daughter of Mathias and Mary Ludwig. In the year 1859** she emigrated to America. Four years later she was united in marriage to John Kaufman, who preceded her in death 34 years ago. Ten children, five boys and five girls, came to bless this union. One boy passed away at the age of six years. She lived for about 60 years on the Kaufman farm south of Harper. She leaves to mourn her loss, nine children, Mrs. Pete Lahr of E. Pleasant Plain, John Kaufman of Sigourney, Catherine Singmaster of Keota, Mrs A. O. Pratt of Washington, Iowa, Mrs. Anna Hahn of Richland, Joseph and Nicholas Kaufman of The Dalles, Oregon and George and Margaret Kaufman, who reside on the home place, with whom she lived. She also leaves one brother, Matt Ludwig of Cheney, Washington and one sister, Mrs. Catherine Rettler of Harper, 26 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren.
