Obituary from Denver paper:

Private memorial services were held Monday afternoon [May 5, 1975] for Howard C. "Ham" Beresford, former University of Colorado coach and sports editor of the Rocky Mountain News.

Beresford, of 3435 S. Bellaire St., died Sunday night in Veterans Administration Hospital after a lengthy cancer illness. He was 79 and in accordance with his wishes his body was donated to medical science.

Born April 12, 1896, in Orleans, NE, he moved with his family to Boulder [CO] in 1906. He attended Boulder public school and was graduated from the University of Colorado in 1918. Following graduation, Beresford joined the Army and served as a second lieutenant in the infantry in World War I.

After receiving his discharge from the service, Beresford returned to Boulder and became a teacher and coach at Boulder High School. He left high school coaching in 1924 to become head basketball coach at CU, a position he held for 10 years.

He served as sports editor of the News from June 1933 until June 1, 1934, leaving the newspaper for physical fitness, recreation and rehabilitation work with the U.S. government.

Shortly before World War II, Beresford became a civilian consultant in community services, doing liaison work between air bases and civilians.

In 1945 he became a field representative of President Truman's Armed Forces Committee on Religion and Welfare. He retired from government service in 1960 and devoted his time to teaching creative music and accompanying his wife, Mollie Lee, on piano during her reading recitals.

Beresford was married to Mollie Lee Bowles of Ponca City, OK, on August 15, 1926, while she was attending CU.

He received the CU Business School Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1942, and the university's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1967.

Beresford was a member of First Plymouth Congregational Church and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.

Surviving, in addition to his widow, are a son, Dr. Richard Beresford of Old Westbury, Long Island, NY; a duaghter, Mrs. Virginia McGehee of Denver, three grandchildren, brothers Stuart and Kenneth of Denver and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Lovelace of Evanston, IL.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the University of Colorado Medical Center Scholarship Fund in the name of Howard C. Beresford, Box A-065, 4200 E. Ninth Ave., in care of Joan Hamilton.
