CALLIE wrote lots of letters after she had attended a woman's college (Hollins Institute of Roanoke, VA which began in 1842) & also as the Civil War was beginning & during the war. She wrote to her family & friends from college. (These are in the Library of the State of VA.)

Callie said she had lots of first names but only went-by "Callie". Her first 2 names were that of her dad's mother, Susan Austin.

She said that she hoped that she could finish her last year @ school but doubted it would happen as people were staying close to home & family due to the war. She longed to fall in love & to marry. She mourned the loss of her sister Morgiana who died @ only 18 & after only 3 1/2 months of marriage. [She named her only child with Victor Brandon after her sister but spelled it a little differently (Morginna instead of Morgiana).] She said she had lost a baby brother who was born after her younger brother John; she said he didn't live & did not mention a name for him. Her other brother Benjamin had the sweetest wife she said. Brother, John Anthony, went to Randolph-Macon College in Boyton in 1860. He wrote Callie from there.

She loved her parents' home & said that "Walnut Hill" was so beautiful! She longed to have a large home & staff of servants of her own & a "perfect man to love" & marry.

"Callie" got her wish & married "Victor Moreau Brandon" in 1863 VA.

VICTOR was born in 1836 NC & died in 1866 VA.

Callie's Mother, Martha Davis Haden Anthony, & her father, Charles Anthony, were both alive when this tragedy happened to their surviving daughter Callie's husband in 1866. Callie & her daughter Morginna lived @ Walnut Hill. Mother Martha died in 1870; Father Charles in 1884. Callie's descendants still live @ Walnut Hill in 2017.
