~~ CHARLES ANTHONY ~~
_________________________________________
"Charles Anthony" was born in 1793 @ Evington, Campbell Co., VA; he died in 1884 @ his home (that he called Walnut Hill) @ Campbell Co., VA. There was a large grove of black walnut trees where he built his home; hence, the name of the home.
_______________________________
Charles was the youngest son of:
~ "John Anthony, JR." (1746 VA—1822 VA) &
~ "Susan Austin" (1749 VA—1817 VA).
_______________________________
THE REV. WAR = Charles' Dad's Service:
* "John Anthony, JR." was a Soldier in the 10th Continental VA Regiment during The Rev. War. He served from January 1777 til the end of the war. * _________________________________________
John JR. & Susan married in 1771 VA.
They had 8 Children = 6 sons & 2 daughters who were raised @ a brick home which his dad built overlooking the Anthony Mill Creek (today termed Mill Creek).
-------------------------------
~ John Anthony, JR. was the "only son" of John Anthony, Sr. (1715 VA—1760 VA). Thus, JR. inherited much of his dad's vast landholdings along the Otter River.

~ SR. lived in Albemarle Co., Bedford Co., & Campbell Co., VA & purchased 1,012 acres in 1754 on both sides of the Otter River & 674 acres in 1759 @ the head of Blackwater/Ivy Creek. He was a Justice-of-the-Peace of Albemarle Co., VA in 1745-1746. He died in 1760.

~ JR. purchased 1,300 acres in 1780 on the south branch of Otter Creek. He built a brick home on a hill that overlooked Anthony Mill Creek (a tributary of Goose Creek). The Anthony Family lived here in the late 1700's-mid 1800's. This was home to John Anthony JR., wife Susan, & their 8 Children.

~ JR. became a Baptist minister in 1776. He started a church that he named the Otter Church which later became the Bethlehem Church of Bedford Co., VA. He served there til his death in 1822.

~JR.'s son, Capt. Mark Anthony, SR., had a grist mill & a saw mill & an Anthony ferry station @ Anthony Mill Creek @ Campbell Co., VA (today known as Mill Creek).

~ JR.'s sons, CHARLES & Abner Anthony, also ran ferry stations on the Roanoke & Otter River in Franklin & Pittsylvania Counties, VA.

~ CHARLES turned mostly to farming & built a home in the early 1800's that he called "Walnut Hill" near Evington. There is a family cemetery located on the grounds of the estate (as stated in the papers in the Library of the State of VA). His descendants live in the beautiful home today which is on private property. [Another Walnut Hill (also near Evington) is on the registry of historic homes which is owned by the Leftwich family.]

~ Abner even started a town in 1818 called Monroe on the banks of the Strauton River. It's post office was Monroeton. The town's plat consisted of many streets; in 1869, Monroe was no longer on the tax rolls. Monroe was submerged by the formation of Smith Mountain Lake. It would have been on the south shoreline of the lake. Abner became a Baptist minister (like their dad JR. was). Abner ministered in Bedford, Franklin, & Pittsylvania Counties of VA.

~ There was even an Anthony Bridge which a few decades ago was torn down to further progress the area.

~ Much of the Anthony holdings have been submerged by the formation of Smith Mountain Lake & Leesville Lake. Roads around these lakes still bear the name Anthony.
-------------------------------
In the Library of VA @ Richmond, there is a large collection of letters, deeds, documents, etc. from the youngest son of John Anthony JR. = Charles Anthony (1793- 1884) & his daughter (Callie J. Brandon 1839-1886) & his grand'daughter' (Charles Anthony 1883-1966). One of the accounts is that Charles saw his older brother, Banks Anthony, riding up to the homeplace one evening in 1815. He then saw this approaching Banks & his horse literally disappear. Days later, the family learned that William Banks Anthony had been killed @ The Battle of New Orleans (during The War of 1812) on the very day that Charles saw Banks' ghost riding his horse up to the homeplace. As late as 1960, Charles' granddaughter (who was literally named Charles Anthony) told a reporter the story of her grandpa seeing his brother Banks' ghost riding up to the old homeplace on the same day that Banks died in battle.
