She was born October 11, 1922, in Fort Worth, TX, the daughter of Callie and Ernest Ashe of Sherman, MS.
She graduated from Pascal High School in 1940 and attended Texas State College for Women, now Texas Women’s University in Denton.
She married William Randolph “Bill” Black on December 20, 1942. He preceded her in death on February 24, 1989.
Their first son W.R. “Randy” Black, Jr., was born during World War II. After the war, the three came to live in Breckenridge to operate the family’s ranch, established in 1878, with Bill’s brother Jack. Two more children followed: Walt (now of Dallas) and Ann (of Breckenridge).
She’s survived by her children, daughter-in-law Karen Black of Dallas, 5 grandchildren: W. R. “Beau” Black III of Fort Worth; Meredith and Cameron Mathews of Dallas; Lauren and Sean Hill of Lubbock; Emily and Kevin Cates of Knox City; Megan and Cory Moulton of Dallas; and nine great grandchildren.
She stayed involved in civic and church activities her whole life, including Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Breckenridge Boys’ Choir, Christian Women’s Fellowship, Women’s Forum, Meals On Wheels, and countless service and leadership roles at the First Christian Church of Breckenridge, where she sang in the choir for 62 years.
Looking back over her life, she observed, “Hardly any of this matters except to say that I am grateful to have been me, to have lived when I did and been an American, to have been allowed to be mother to my precious children and grandmother to such loving grandchildren, and to have known all my friends.”
Funeral services will be on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 1:00pm at the First Christian Church of Breckenridge, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Christian Church of Breckenridge, Sanctuary Restoration Fund.
