Robert J. “Bob” Polman, 78, of Iowa City, died unexpectedly Monday morning at home.
Funeral Mass will begin Thursday at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
Visitation will be held Thursday morning at the church from 8:30 until 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association. Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City is handling arrangements.
Bob was born March 3, 1939 on the family farm near Nichols, Iowa, the son of Albert P. and Sophia (VanAken) Polman. He was raised and grew up in Lone Tree and graduated from Lone Tree High School.
Moving to Iowa City in 1961, Bob met and later married Carolyn Hurt in Iowa City on October 2, 1965. He was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Church.
Bob worked as a press operator for the Iowa City Press Citizen and later for University Printing – retiring in 2001.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn; daughter, Pam Bergman (Steve) and son Steve Polman (Anne Banes), all of Iowa City; grandchildren, Robbie (Jessica Alexander), Nick and Sophie; a great-grandson, Benjamin Robert; three sisters, Louise Ulch of Marshalltown, Kathleen Meeks of Iowa City and Shirley J. Bohr of Wellman and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Donald F., Donald T., Leroy and Albert “Abe” and two sisters, Dorothea Hazen and Darlene Miller.
