Jim’s career in law enforcement began in August 1972 as a police officer for the City of Newport. He climbed to the rank of sergeant, and many years later transferred to the Newport Fire Department while staying active in police work. Jim also worked for the Tuckerman and Swifton Police Departments, while working as a reserve officer in Newport. He also owned Jim’s Siding Company, bought and sold cars, had rental property, then retired in 1993 ranking as Captain. Jim then ran for Jackson County Sheriff, won, and held this office until his “retirement” in 2004. Later, he bought Jim’s Furniture, and spent a great deal of time entertaining his beloved group of coffee drinking friends, and solving the world’s problems. He was loved and respected by so many from all walks of life all over the great state of Arkansas.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Bill and Charles Bishop.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda Kirk Bishop of the home; three children, Laura Molder and husband, Kevin, of Harrisburg, Brad Bishop of Newport, and Jami Cook and husband, Nathan, of Sheridan; six grandchildren, Brandon Mitchell and wife, Morgan, of Harrisburg, Donavan Bishop of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Cody Bishop of Topeka, Kansas, Jake Cook of Sheridan, Dylan Molder of Harrisburg, Anna Cook of Sheridan; two great-grandbabies, Sadie and Mia Mitchell of Harrisburg; brothers, Frankie, Kenny, Doug, and Dewayne Bishop; sisters, Christine Hively, Bobbie Ballew, Doris Holladay, and Liz Broadway; several loving nieces and nephews; their Friday night dinner partners of 20 years, Johnny and Nora Gibson; special friend, Tommy Berry; a host of special family and a lifetime of friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the US Navy Sea Cadet Corps, 2961 Hwy 167 N, Sheridan, AR, 72150, a program he enjoyed supporting for his grandson Jacob James, and Harrisburg 4-H Shooting Sports , P.O. Box 108, Harrisburg, AR 72432, which his grandson Dylan James is very active in.
Friends may visit at the funeral home Friday, 5:00-7:00 p.m. Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Old Enterprise Cemetery in Jonesboro.
