Charles W. Bishop, of Estero, Florida, passed away at his home Saturday, April 27, 2013, with his family at his bedside after a courageous battle with melanoma.

Charles Bishop was born May 16, 1944, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, to Hardy and Rosie Bishop.

He attended Valley View High School and entered the Army in 1961. Charlie served in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War era and was discharged from the military in 1964. He lived in California and Arkansas for a short period of time before moving to Rockford, Ill., where he joined the Rockford Police Department in 1967. Charlie was assigned to the patrol division, then became the first undercover officer in the metro narcotics unit where he was responsible for investigating narcotics violations and organized crime. He also worked in the detective bureau, administration, and was promoted to sergeant where he was assigned to the patrol bureau until his retirement. Charlie took great pride in his 33-year career as a police officer and was very proud to serve the City of Rockford. During his career, Charlie also served as secretary of the Policeman's Benevolent and Protective Association Unit 6 and as president of the Rockford Police Relief Association for many years.

A graduate of LaSalle Law School, Western Illinois University and Northwestern University Traffic Institute, Charlie and his wife, Donna Bishop, formed Bishop Incorporated in 1975. Under the corporation they operated Bishop Tax and Accounting Service, Bishop Security, and Bishop Fire and Burglar Alarm Service. Charlie and Donna enjoyed the challenges of building the business together and being able to provide solid jobs for their employees.

In April 2001, after retiring from the Rockford Police Department, Charlie and Donna moved to Pelican Sound Golf and River Club in Estero. Or as Charlie referred to it, "The best kept secret in all of Southwest Florida." Charlie served as board president of Pelican Sound and president of Turnberry I Condo Association. Charlie loved the community he helped build and met some of his best friends here. Charlie enjoyed golfing, fishing, fixing and building computers, and visiting with his many friends who lived and worked here.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 35 years, Donna Bishop, who he married in Rockford on Aug. 11, 1977, and their daughter, Natasha Bishop of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; his daughters from a previous marriage to Joan Jacobson, Betty (Chad Waits) of Mauston, Wis., Shelia Kleba of Belvidere, Ill., and Patricia (Keith) Reagan of Machesney Park, Ill.; his grandchildren, Brandon, Taylor, Morgan, Shelby, Mallary and Paige; great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Nate, Trenton and Guage; his siblings, Christine, Bobby, Frankie, Jim, Ken, Elizabeth, Doris, Doug, Dewayne; his best friend, Frank Fox; and his granddog, Coltrane.

He was predeceased by his parents, Hardy and Rosie Bishop, and his brother, Billy.

Charlie was a good, kind and generous man who enjoyed lending a helping hand to friends, family and strangers, and never asked for anything in return. We will miss his infectious sense of humor, his ingenious knowledge, and immense wisdom. Charlie was the rock of his family and super hero to all of his daughters. Charlie Bishop enjoyed life to the fullest and was very proud of the life and family he built. Charlie lived his life with "no regrets."

Services were at Shikany's Bonita Funeral Home, Bonita Springs, Fla.
