Alexander N. "Alex" Hawks, 91, of Ridgeway, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem. He was born in Patrick County on July 11, 1913, to William Hawks and Savannah Pruitt Hawks. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his foster parents, Lawrence and Rhoda "Sissy" Quesenberry; four brothers, Early Hawks, Victor Hawks, Floyd Hawks and Arnold Hawks; and a sister, Rebecca Prillaman. He served in the Navy during World War II. He retired from Gravely Furniture Co. Surviving are his wife, Della Clark Hawks of the home; two sisters, Elsie Shuman of Nanty Glo, Pa., and Dana Markam of Roanoke; a half sister Nellie Lawson of Kernersville, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Mark Clayton officiating. Burial will be in Patrick Memorial Gardens with military honors conducted by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Annie Sue Hawks, Kelly Mill Road, Stuart.
