Mr. Allen was born in High Point, N.C. He retired in 1980 after 43 years from Norfolk & Western Railroad. He wa a charter member and a deacon at Riverside Baptist Church and member of Parker Memorial Sunday School Class. He was a member of the United Transportation Union Local (NU)48, Norview Masonic Lodge (NU)113 A.F. & A.M. Norfolk Scottish Rite Bodies and Khedive Temple of the Shrine. He was a volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Bank and a Red Cross volunteer following Hurricane Hugo. He worked for the Virginia Sports Service following his retirement. He worked at Harbor Park during the 1993 season with the Sweet Adelines.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Iola B. Allen; three sons, Irving L. Allen Sr. and Rauanell C. Allen Jr., both of Norfolk, and Allan Ray Allen Sr. of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Riverside Baptist Church by the Rev. Herb Holton. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will be at Smith & William Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach, from 6 to 7 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross. Masonic rites will be accorded at the grave.
