Dempsey was predeceased by his wife, Nell Stephens, and one daughter, Mary Lou Baker. He is survived by one son, Tommy Stephens (Violet) of Greenville, SC; one daughter, Debbie Allen of Myrtle Beach, SC; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Dempsey loved the outdoors, and spending time in his garden. He was especially fond of beekeeping, a hobby that he enjoyed for many years. He was well known for his honey.
