Sarah Smith was born in the State of Virginia August 10, 1830, and departed this life Feb. 4, 1912, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ada Shortridge of this place.
She was united in marriage to Abraham Bailey Oct. 1, 1849. To this union ten children were born: Isaac, who died in infancy; Mary E. Bailey of Iowa, David H. and Martha E. Koontz of Ashland, Mildred F. Shortridge of Philadelphia, Ada I. Shortridge, and Chas. W. Bailey of Ashland; Geo. W. of Virginia, Benj. F. of Philadelphia, and a daughter dying in infancy. Besides the bereaved family, she leaves twenty five grand children, and nine great grand children, also to mourn her demise; two brothers and four sisters, Hiram Smith and Noah Smith of near Ashland, Mrs. J. A. Decker of Texas, Mrs. John Gray of the State of Virginia, Mrs. Robert Bailey of Oklahoma and Mrs. C. D. Lucas of Kansas.
In their early married life they came from the State of Virginia to Illinois, making the trip by wagon.
Mrs. Bailey converted during a revival held in Philadelphia in 1888 and baptized into Christ by Isaac Beckelhymer who now lives in Eureka. She lived a consistent Christian life, one which the world likes to pattern after. She never had an enemy as far as any one knew and wad industrious and devoted to her family and home and labored that others might enter in and enjoy the labour of her hands, sowed beautifully and reaped bountifully.
Besides those above mentioned she leaves the companion of her life, who is very feeble and waiting her beckoning hand on the other shore.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. F. M. Morgan, Christian minister of Ashland, Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock at Philadelphia. Interment at Garner Chapel cemetery. The pallbearers were: Harvey Shafer, Sam McLin, Frank Cosner, John Devlin, John Black and Andrew Wright.
