Samuel Dewey Lynn (aka Dewey Samuel) was born on 7 May 1899 in Raton, Colfax County, New Mexico. (Note: The recorded birth year varies from 1897-1899). Samuel was the son of Samuel W. Lynn and Mary Winter/s, who married at the home of Mary's mother in Raton, NM, in July of 1890.

Samuel's father, Samuel W. of Chico Springs, NM, died at the home of his mother in Ratan, NM, in September of 1906, from injuries from an accident with a horse. After their father's death, Samuel and his brother David lived with their uncle John Thomas Lynn and his wife, Clara, in Kingfisher County, Oklahoma. In 1920, Dewey and his younger sister, Dora, lived with their sister, Florence, and her husband, David O. A. Thomas, in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Samuel D. Lynn married Dorothy E. (Ethel) Wade on 24 Mar 1930, in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. Samuel and Dorothy had four children. In the 1940 census, Samuel and Dorothy were living in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas, with their three oldest children. They divorced, date unknown. Samuel moved to Picher, Oklahoma, where he worked in the zinc mines. The first record of Samuel was living in Picher, Oklahoma, was his registration for the WWII draft.

In July of 1950, Sam married Judy (Wilson) Crawford, widow of Joseph Crawford, at Ottawa County, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on 11 Jan 1953 at their home in Picher, Oklahoma.

Samuel Dewey Lynn died on 23 Apr 1953 at his home in Picher, Oklahoma. Burial was in the G.A.R. Cemetery, Miami, Oklahoma. His obituary stated that he was survived by a daughter and two sons; his brother, David Lynn, of Hennessey, Oklahoma; and a sister, Mrs. W. H. Shipman (Florence), Atlanta, Georgia.
