He is believed to have been the son of Boghos and Nartouhi Kurkjian of Tokat, Turkey. He had an older sister who died in the Armenian Genocide and a younger one who survived it. It seems Pilbos was already in Istanbul during it in 1915 which is how he likely survived it. Based on a letter he was still alive around 1926. He had two other brothers whose fates are unknown but at least one was likely killed in the summer of 1915 in Tokat along with the other men of the village.
