Sister Angelina Abeyta, OP, was born and named Valentina on February 21, 1923 in Abeytas, NM to Santiago and Andrea Sanchez Abeyta. She died on December 21, 2014 at her motherhouse, Marywood in Grand Rapids, MI. She received her Bachelor's degree with a major in Spanish and a minor in Sociology and earned a Master's degree in Religious Education. She was a Dominican Sister for 70 years, and began serving as a teacher in several Michigan parish schools. She was a coordinator of religious education at San Juan Pueblo, Mission Office Coordinator for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe and worked at San Jose Parish in Albuquerque. Sister Angelina then served in Amarillo, Texas with the Ministry Resource Center. She was founder of Centro Mujeres de la Esperanza, a center to assist women and children at the El Paso/Ciudad Juarez border.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters Alberto, Isabel, Arturo, Ruben and Gregorita.

She is survived by her sisters Mela Sanchez of Mesa, Arizona; Angelina Trujillo of Belen, New Mexico; Sister Dolores Abeyta of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Dolores (Benjamin) Duran of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; sister-in-law Pauline Abeyta of Las Cruces, New Mexico; brother-in-law Herman Baca of Santa Rosa, New Mexico; nieces, nephews; many friends and members of her Dominican community.

A Memorial Mass for Sister Angelina will be held at 10 am on Friday, March 20, 2015 at San Jose Parish, 2401 Broadway SE, Albuquerque. Donations in her name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters Health Care Fund.
