Joseph was a Union soldier during the Civil War, serving in Co. F, 40th Iowa Volunteer Infantry.
Joseph married Anna, and they were the parents of Herbert Mack Stone. Herbert was the father of actor Milburn Stone.
A little humor from the Burrton Graphic dated June 21, 1895; "We regret to state that several of Burrton's most prominent citizens have taken to hard drinking. If you want to know who they are, just keep your eye on Stroh's soda fountain and you will see - well see for yourself. Johnny McArthur and Joe Stone stand up and account of yourselves."
The 1900 Census states that Joseph and his wife were the parents of 7 children, 6 living.
The April 24, 1908 issue of the Burrton Graphic newspaper mentions that Joseph Stone was succeeded as postmaster by Mike Michael, and that Stone had held the position for 9 years,
